My DIY rut is finally over and I'm sure everyone will be relieved to know I've been spray painting and working on projects around here. In fact, inspiration hit me last night when I was struck to organize my messy coat closet. If you are one of the two people who was reading this blog back in '09, even you probably wouldn't remember the coat closet organization I did back then as one of my first posts.

Since then, I upgraded the bins which hold my purses and our scarves/gloves to these much nicer and bigger ones that I picked up at AC Moore (for $4 each on sale I believe). But since then, they started to grow cramped and messy.

And the rest of the closet was a mess too, especially with a bunch of posts-holiday returns cluttering the closet floor (I hate returning and totally procrastinate on it).

So I got to work yesterday. Mainly because my sister brought me these hand-me-down closet bins over the weekend. They were just the kick I needed to get this closet into shape.

On the top shelf, I loaded all of the store returns I have yet to make (don't worry, I don't usually keep a frying pan in my coat closet). I’m happy to have a dedicated spot for this now as I usually forget about returning stuff. Now, when I grab my coat to go the the store hopefully I’ll be able to easily spot any returns I need to take with me. The second shelf is for stashing Rob’s hats and our gloves. These were previously in the big bins up top, but they were too hard to get to. Instead, I placed the most used hats and gloves on the new shelves and packed away our less frequently used scarves and other stuff since we’ve been having mild winter anyway. And the bottom shelf is for doggy stuff like his harness and maybe even a sweater or two. I previously didn’t have a spot for my pooch’s possessions so I’m sure he’ll give his new shelf two paws up.

With hats and gloves out of the way, I stashed away some more of my handbags into the second striped bin. While trying to sort through my handbags I realized just how many I had and I plan to get rid of some at my next garage sale if not sooner. I don’t think I have even used any of the big bags since that first closet photo from 2009. Yikes!

Here’s the much more organized coat closet now:

It's so much easier to keep the house clean with closets are organized, don't you think? And please someone tell me that I'm not the only one who hoards store returns and forgets about them??
