Fraiser Crane's Apartment: Modernized

It's been a while since I did a modernized a TV show home set, but upon a reader request's I wanted to update the set of Fraiser (you can check out my past TV updates: The Golden Girls, Three's Company and The Brady Bunch here).

Dr. Fraiser Crane, a bachelor with a refined taste for the finer things in life, lived in his Seattle apartment with his father Marty. We watched Fraiser in his apartment from 1993 to 2004, during which time he had a contemporary style.  He had a neutral living room, except of course for Marty's old recliner chair.


In the dining area, Fraiser had a pedestal table with glass top and neutral chair.



Fraiser's set still has a lot of elements which could still be stylish today, but I'd like to think that if Fraiser was still living in Seattle he'd have a more modern and minimalistic style these days.



Here's how I'd modernize Fraiser's apartment if the TV show took place today:



- New neutral sofa.  Still neutral, but with a sleeker design (Crate & Barrel)
- Curved console table (West Elm)
- Modern coffee table. I think Fraiser would be into more minimalist look these days. (Crate & Barrel)
- Floor lamp to update the torch lights he has at the back of the room. (Pottery Barn)
- Modern recliner.  I think Martin would agree to this sleek, but comfy chair. (West Elm)
- Wood and metal side table, perfect for holding Martin's beer and remote. (West Elm)
- Glass dining table. Still glass, but a new look. (Crate & Barrel)
- Cutback chairs. Since the rest of the room is neutral, I think Fraiser would like these patterned chairs. (Target)

That's how I imagine Fraiser living these days, back in his Seattle pad.  Did you watch Fraiser?  I still like to catch the re-runs on TV.  I have a lot of fun putting these looks together, so leave a comment if there are any other TV shows you'd like to see updated.

Three's Company Apartment: Modernized

I'm having a lot of fun "modernizing" old TV show sets.  If you missed it, check out my take on modernized and updated Golden Girls and Brady Bunch living rooms.  Today, I'm having some fun with the Three's Company set.

I love watching old episodes of Three's Company.  My favorite episode was the one where there was some kind of misunderstanding and crazy hijinks ensued (just kidding, that was every episode)!  Here's Jack, Chrissy, and Janet on their living room couch.  I prefer the original cast, with Chrissy.

Three's Company took place in Santa Monica, California and their apartment had a beachy vibe.  Janet was a florist so they had plants everywhere.  

Now here's my take on the Three's Company set and how I'd modernize their living room if the show took place today:

Here's the breakdown of this updated Three's Company living room:

-Instead of a patterned sofa, I chose a neutral sofa with patterned pillow.

-I kept the drum shape of the coffee table, but modernized it with this cool dark aluminum version.

-The lamp style stayed very similar with this thin floor lamp.

-The side table was updated with a dark finish and a new storage basket underneath.

-The entryway chair is still wicker, but also has a new dark finish.

-The curtains are very similar to the original, with a fun beachy feel.

-There's also a new dark finish for the ladder style bookshelf.

-Janet added her touch to the place with wicker planters like this round one and this square one.  And of course lots of plants like this, this, and this.

I can picture Jack, Janet, and Chrissy having a lot of fun in an apartment like this.  There are plenty of plants for Janet to take care of and plenty of things for Jack to trip over!

Brady Bunch House: Modernized

Since my modernized Golden Girls house was a hit, I decided to make this a regular feature on the blog!  Today, I'm putting a modern twist on the Brady Bunch house!

I loved watching this show as a kid; the Brady kids were always having fun with wholesome mischief like potato sack races in the yard, dressing up as ghosts to spook potential home buyers, and finding ancient haunted tikis in Hawaii.

Here's the happy family lined up on the stairs for a family portrait.  In one episode the boys play ball in the house, against Carol's rules, and accidentally break a precious vase on this table.  The horse luckily remains intact.


Here's Peter and Jan putting on a magic show for the family.  Cindy was too scared by the magic to attend.



I decided to recreate the Brady Bunch living room to imagine what it would look like if the show took place today.  This awesome drawing of their living room provides a good look at all of its 70s charm.



And here's my version of an updated and modernized Brady Bunch house.  As I was putting this room together, it occurred to me how much of the Brady's furniture is back in style these days!



 Here's the breakdown of this very Brady living room:

- Brown Sectional: With 6 kids the Bradys need a lot of seating so I chose a sectional rather than a sofa. It's not green and floral but it is a 70s approved chocolate brown with stain resistant fabric to boot.
-Canary Print Pillows: The floral print of the sofa had to go, but I kept a fun print with these canary throw pillows. 
- Green Chair: I had to keep some green furniture, so I chose this Z Gallerie chair which is strikingly similar to the original.
-Wood Coffee Table: I choose a mid-century looking coffee table, this time with a shelf for extra storage for the kiddos.
-Cube Side Table:  It's not a hexagon, but this chunky cube makes for a nice side table with hidden storage.
-Silver Lamp: Z Gallerie must have been checking out the Brady bunch house too because this lamp is also strikingly similar to the original.
-Striped Curtains: I'm not sure what those curtains in the background of the living room are, but I found some similar horizontal striped ones.
-Collage Frame: I couldn't resist adding a collage frame for those smiling family portraits, including Alice of course.
-Buffet Table: Z Gallerie came through again with another piece that's very close to the original.  I'm seriously starting to wonder if Mike Brady has some ties to the store.
-Horse Statue: The room can't be complete without their iconic horse, of course.  Another Z Gallerie find!

Golden Girls House: Modernized

It’s no secret that I love the Golden Girls (in fact I’ve managed to somehow mention them in my blog posts here, here, and here); its only one of the best TV shows ever after all.  Recently while I was watching a Golden Girls marathon, I got to thinking about what the Girls’ house would look like if the show took place today.  Back in the 80s and early 90s when the show aired, The Golden Girls Miami house was decorated in wicker and pastel floral prints.

If the show took place today, I’d like to think the Golden Girls living room would still have a tropical Miami vibe, but the bright colors would be focused on the accessories rather than the main furniture in the room.  Here’s my modernized take on the Golden Girls house:

Here’s the breakdown of my Golden Girls inspired living room:

-Banana Settee & Armchair: I kept the wicker look, but modernized it with a sofa and chair made of banana bark and mahogany.
-Accent Pillows (Yellow, Blue & Pink): Instead of floral furniture, I think floral pillows are a fun updated look.
-Klubbo Coffee Table: I kept the square coffee table shape, but updated it from wicker to wood.
-Blue Vase: This vase brings in some of the traditional elements the Girls had in their living room.
-Eat, Pray, Love Book: As a substitute English teacher, Dorothy loved reading. I can picture the girls curled up on their new sofa with a good book like this.
-Glass End Table: The end table is still glass but with contemporary metal accents rather than brass.
-Sea Glass Lamp: To bring in some pastel and tropical colors, I added this sea inspired lamp.
-Lacquer Floor Vase & Willow Branches: The turquoise blue color is continued into this fun floor vase.
-Potted Plant: Plants never go out of style and this tropical beauty has a Miami vibe.
-Sea Flower Blue Print: Their art has been updated too but keeps it pretty pastel colors and continues the tropical vibe.
